DON'T LOOK UP
I recently had the pleasure of watching the movie Don’t Look Up. In the film we watch as a society crumbles due to the findings of two astronomers. As the movie begins we find out that an asteroid is hurtling towards earth to make a direct impact, and society slowly falls apart and divides into the believers and non-believers. This film is an obvious commentary on the divide in political parties in the United States and how the media has contributed to the problem. Throughout the movie we see added scenes of social media sites and how people are processing the information.
The entire film there is a fight between two parties. Half the country is begging the other half to look into the sky and watch the asteroid that is classified as their impending doom. We watch as the rich and powerful find out that the rock is made up of precious minerals and they want to let it hit so that they can mine the materials to make the rich richer. The moral of the story is that False information in the media is enough to screw the public's perception of even the worst situations. The news station that we watch in the film goes as far as to say they like to keep things light hearted, which contributes to the fact that so many people didn’t fear the situation. When word spreads we see social media flooded with people saying that they are all doomed, and arguing over the science because of what they are hearing from the powerful and rich leaders of the country.
As the movie comes to a close and the rich fail their attempt to save the earth, we watch them board a ship to a new planet, while leaving earth behind to face their mistakes. I think this movie is an amazing view on the current status of our country. The political divide, the miss information, and the power of the richest Americans, all ring true to our country's situation. We see everyday that our government is releasing information that is obviously falsely fabricated to give us confidence where it shouldn’t be given. The social media networks were also insanely accurate–with people commenting on videos calling others liars and pushing their own agenda based on misinformation they received from their own political party, regardless of scientific background. Overall I really enjoyed watching this movie and it gives a fantastic perspective on the state of the world, and I would call this a must watch film.
